Fit Like a Fighter: MMA Program Transforming At Risk Youth in Portmore (See full article in Jamaica Observer)

Fit Like a Fighter, a charitable MMA‑based youth initiative in Portmore, is making a powerful impact on Jamaica’s next generation. Led by fitness trainer and MMA coach Odean “Coach OT” Taylor, the program offers free training, mentorship, and emotional support to young people facing difficult circumstances — and the results are undeniable.

Through structured MMA drills, discipline‑building exercises, and consistent guidance, participants learn emotional regulation, respect, confidence, and how to respond thoughtfully under pressure. Many of the youth arrive carrying heavy personal battles, but the gym gives them a safe space to be heard, supported, and challenged.

Fit Like a Fighter goes beyond training. The program provides equipment, meals, transportation, school supplies, and one‑on‑one mentorship. Taylor’s approach focuses on listening and understanding, helping youth work through the issues behind their behavior rather than punishing them for it.

The program’s annual showcase, D’Coliseum, highlights the athletes’ growth and serves as its main fundraiser. Taylor is calling on Corporate Jamaica to support the initiative so it can expand into schools, communities, and eventually multiple dedicated facilities across the island.

Fit Like a Fighter is proving that MMA is more than a sport — it’s a tool for transformation. One session, one young person, one breakthrough at a time, the program is reshaping futures and strengthening Jamaica’s MMA community.
